Special Olympics Oregon to Partner with the Portland Timbers



UPDATE:

Teams exchanged pre-game gifts after an opening ceremony and player introductions.

The SOWA Sounders scored the opening goal after a few minutes of even play. SOOR Timbers then responded with an equalizer before SOWA netted a couple more goals just prior to halftime to take a 3-1 lead. In the second half, the SOWA Sounders took advantage of some great scoring opportunities and were bolstered exceptional goalkeeper play. In the end, the SOOR Timbers applied plenty of pressure but could not close the gap. Final Score: SOWA Sounders 6, SOOR Timbers 2.

After the game, everyone headed to Qwest Field to participate in some exhibition and skills activities inside the stadium gates prior to joining each other in the stands to watch the MLS match between the Portland Timbers and the Seattle Sounders.

Will SOOR be able to defend its home field in July? We will just have to wait and see! Remember The Portland Timbers will be hosting the Special Olympics Sounders on Sunday, July 10th at Jeld-Wen Field– don’t miss the action!

Special Olympics Washington and the Seattle Sounders Football Club, as a Global Football partner, have invited Special Olympics Oregon to partner with the Portland Timbers to participate in the Cascadia Championship Series. A ground-breaking series featuring two Special Olympics teams with affiliations to their home state MLS clubs. This match-up is the first game of the home and away series. The Portland Timbers will be hosting the Special Olympics Sounders on Sunday, July 10th at Jeld-Wen Field– don’t miss the action!

The Special Olympics Oregon Unified Sports gold medal winning soccer team from Bend High School will wear the Timbers uniform in Seattle on May 14th. Unified Sports teams are comprised of individuals with intellectual disabilities playing alongside teammates without intellectual disabilities.

“We are so grateful to have a partnership with the Portland Timbers and are excited to be a part of this ground-breaking event,” said Margaret Hunt, CEO of Special Olympics Oregon. “Opportunities like this have such a positive impact on the growth of our soccer program.”

Special Olympics Cascadia Championship Series – First Leg
Saturday, May 14th Event Details

COMPETITION
• Start time: 2:30pm, Starfire Soccer Complex
• Game: 5 on 5 Match featuring high school aged Unified Sports 5 aside soccer teams
• Played at the Seattle Sounders FC training grounds at Starfire Soccer Complex
• Admission is FREE

EXHIBITION
• North Parking Lot, Qwest Field
• 5:30pm: Opening Ceremony
• 6:00pm: 3v3 Unified soccer exhibition
• Both teams will also be featured with an on-field recognition ceremony during the course of the MLS match day festivities.
• Exhibition game highlights will be played prior to the match and at half-time, on the field monitor.
• 8:00pm - Both teams will watch the match sitting together in stadium seating.
